Mail Call

September 15, 2010

"Regarding television, I have come to believe that every 30 minutes of programming consists of five minutes of programming and 25 minutes of commercials."

- Hagerstown

"Individuals irritated by nosy neighbors usually are doing something illegal, and get caught doing it."

- Hagerstown

"I see where there's going to be a big rush on voting for Republicans in November. You go right ahead. If you think about it, they're the ones that got us in the mess to begin with. We had eight years of them. They had their chance; they blew it. And half of them are just chomping at the bit to try to privatize Social Security again. Is that what you want, seniors? Do you want your Social Security to be put in the stock market? Well, that'll work out well for us, won't it?"

- Hagerstown

"This is in response to the Hagerstown caller who stated that outdoor cats are perfectly natural. Following that train of thought, should I allow rats, groundhogs and other assorted pests to disturb my domestic tranquility? You are obliviously one of those who allow your feline to roam at will and become others' problem. I trap domesticated and feral cats, but I don't turn them over to the Humane Society. I simply release them and let them be 'perfectly natural' way far away."

- Cavetown

"In response to the person who thinks outdoor cats are normal and healthy, I have known many outdoor cats and here is how healthy they are: Several never came home, my mother's cat was mauled by a dog, my sister's cat has one less leg after an accident with what the vet thought might be a lawn mower, my cat contracted a virus and had liver cancer. ... If these cats had been indoors, as domestic pets should be, they might still be alive and healthy."

- Hagerstown

"To the caller from Hagerstown who said the Republicans are out there to cut Social Security: ... I don't care whether they got a 'R' or a 'D' in front of their names. We know that Social Security is going broke and something's got to be done. So let's look at reality and realize that it can't keep on, because the politicians, all of them, have spent all the money that's supposed to be in Social Security for other things, so ... let's just get them all out and get a bunch of honest people in there that we can trust."

- Boonsboro

"Please don't use children in political TV commercials. They don't vote, and they really know very little about politics."

- Hagerstown

"I'm just calling to congratulate The Herald-Mail on its TV guide section of the newspaper. It's pretty bad when you pay $4 for a TV guide at the grocery store and it doesn't even have hardly anything in it. It only has the listings for nighttime, mostly. So the TV guide in the Sunday newspaper is better than the one we pay $4 for."

- Hagerstown

"I was watching TV covering President Obama's programs and the Democratic Congress and Senate. Every job that's a government job, a schoolteacher's job, that's unionized got all the money, and the average worker, they didn't get anything. So I think it's very unfair for Obama to take care of the unions instead of taking care of the average worker who works for a living that's not unionized. I think that's very, very unfair."

- Hagerstown

"For a long time I've wondered how you decide what calls get printed. ... I and evidently other callers have suspicions about ideological bias. So why won't you tell us what if any objective criteria you use, or if it's just some kind of random selection, perhaps the old toss of the wastebasket, and the ones that miss get printed method. Or just admit it's really subjective editorial judgment."

- Frederick, Md.

"Concerning the Air Guard that was here in Martinsburg, it was really a ratty deal. People living on Airport Road or Paynes Ford Road couldn't get out or in. They had rent-a-cops or whatever you call them sitting at the end of the roads, telling you you couldn't get out or couldn't come in. Another sign this government is failing."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"This is to the Mount Lena caller. I'm calling in reference to the big red dogs running through your yard. It was probably the parking lot police that let them jump out of a vehicle. Somebody probably saw them stranded in a hot vehicle and just let them out, because we have people in this town that worry about that petty stuff. And the other thing is that, yea, you would have to let the dogs eat you, because in this liberal county, you would go to jail for killing the dogs, even if it was in self-defense."

- Sharpsburg

"I'm calling in response to the lady from Clear Spring that left her husband. No, God doesn't intend you to stay with a batterer. I am a former battered wife, and I fully agree that God has provided me a way to get away from him."

- Hagerstown

"Here I am, coming out of the grocery store, barely enough money to feed myself because of the hard times, and there's a lady in front of me that spent $75 on dog food. Tell me where the problem is in Washington County. Looks like our animals are more important than our community."

- Hagerstown

"In the Bible, God considers when you take an oath under Him to live with somebody until death do you part, for better or worse, that's just it - you took an oath. No, He doesn't expect women or men to put up with an abusive mate, and He does speak about divorce. It's only adultery if you remarry before that spouse - if that spouse is still living when the marriage takes place, because in the eyes of God you're still married to the first person that you married."

- Waynesboro, Pa.
