A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday for a Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area Exhibit and Visitor Center at the historic Newcomer House on Antietam National Battlefield. The center is dedicated to promoting visitor opportunities in the three Maryland counties of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area -- Carroll, Frederick and Washington. The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area Exhibit & Visitor Center will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Oct. 31. In April and November, the center will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The grand-opening weekend of the new center will be held Saturday and Sunday, coinciding with Antietam's battle anniversary weekend and Saturday's Sharpsburg Heritage Festival.
