New CASHS cafeteria offers more options

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Turkey Dinner Day is like a monthly holiday at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

Students and faculty flocked Friday to the school's cafeteria for the popular lunchtime meal, complete with mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy.

"It's like Thanksgiving every month," Assistant Principal Brad Ocker said.

Turkey Dinner Day isn't new to the high school routine, but where it is being served has changed.

Along with numerous other schoolwide renovations and additions, the school opened its new cafeteria, better known as Trojan Court, at the start of the school year and it's been very well-received.

"The new cafeteria, first off, is beautiful," Ocker said. "Second of all, it provides many more options for our students. At this point in time, it appears that our students greatly appreciate what they see because we see them taking pride in the cafeteria."

Ocker said it took the kids a few days the first week to become acclimated to their new, spacious surroundings and food options.


Trojan Court features several food stations, including ones offering pizza and pasta, made-to-order sandwiches, soups and a full-service salad bar. The state-of-the-art cafeteria also offers daily specials, as well as bagged lunches for students on the go.

"It's like a food court," senior Rachel Tardosky said.

With several drink stands and a new, quicker checkout option, long lines are a thing of the past for a facility that feeds more than 2,000 students and faculty daily.

Students can now use a small kiosk in the corner of the cafeteria to deposit money into their school accounts, which can be used during checkout simply by entering their student ID number into a keypad.

Tardosky and fellow senior Alexander Rosenbaum said it used to take almost an entire lunch period to get and eat their turkey dinners. Friday, it took about 10 minutes.

District Food Service Director Ann Ziobrowski added that once students set up their meal fund accounts, parents can monitor activity on them.

In preparing for the new cafeteria, Ziobrowski said nutritional guidelines had to be balanced with meeting students' needs and wants.

After completing an extensive student survey last spring, Ziobrowski said food service officials try to meet with student council representatives at least four times per week to keep up-to-date with what the students want from the new facility.

"We look at it from the standpoint of 'we are their restaurant,'" Ziobrowski said. "We work for them, and it's our job to keep them satisfied and keep them healthy."

As far as healthier foods options, Ocker said, in the past "it was rare that a student would eat a salad because many of them want more than just a salad. But now, you can get a side salad with any of the main food items and it is part of the meal."

In addition to the salad bar, more fresh fruits and vegetables are being offered, Ocker said.

"It's a good variety," Rosenbaum said.

And there's still more in store for the high school eatery.

Black tables and chairs currently fill the large dining room, and a plywood wall runs along one side. Behind that wall will be twice as much dining space when the other side is completed.

"I'm excited to see it all done," Rosenbaum said.
