I-81 express northbound lane to close

September 14, 2010

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- The Interstate 81 express lane between exits 14 and 16 in Franklin County, Pa., will be eliminated Thursday.

Northbound traffic will be returned to two lanes on the regular pavement, according to David Zangrilli, a construction manager with Urban Engineers Inc.

An express lane will be created for southbound traffic starting late Saturday or early Sunday, Zangrilli said.

The southbound express lane will start slightly north of U.S. 30, at the same point where the northbound lane ends. Motorists using the southbound express lane will not be able to access exit 14 at Wayne Avenue.

The express lanes are part of a bridge-replacement project. In early 2010, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced a contract to rehabilitate six mainline and nine overhead bridges on I-81 between Chambersburg and Greencastle, Pa.

PennDOT said all the work should be completed by the end of May 2011. Most of the bridges are already finished, although crews continue to work on the interstate at exits 14 and 16, as well as near the CSX terminal.
