Chicken barbecue to be held Saturday



Blairs Valley First Church of God will hold a chicken barbecue Saturday from 4 p.m. until sold out.

The barbecue will be at Clopper's Grove in Blairs Valley, 13530 Blairs Valley Road. The menu includes one-half chicken for $8.50 or one-quarter chicken for $6.50, with baked potato, green beans, applesauce, roll, tea, coffee and dessert.

Free breakfast



The men of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church will serve a community breakfast Saturday from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Big Pool Community Building. The breakfast is free to the public.

Also, the church invites the community to an outdoor worship service at Fort Frederick State Park pavilion Sunday at 8:45 a.m. The service will be followed by a covered-dish lunch and an afternoon of fun and fellowship. Meat and drinks will be furnished. Take along your lawn chairs.

Crab feed planned



Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Co. will hold an all-you-can-eat crab feed Sunday, Oct. 3, starting at noon at the Clear Spring American Legion pavilion.

In addition to crabs, the menu also consists of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, macaroni salad, fireman's milk and soda. Crabs will be served from 1 to 4 p.m.. Tickets cost $30 per person. Tickets are available by e-mailing stacey9252003@yahoo.com">stacey9252003@yahoo.com.

Basket bingo



The Clear Spring Blazer Band will hold a basket bingo Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Co.'s special events building.

The doors will open at 11 a.m., dinner will be at noon and bingo starts at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and prizes will include Longaberger baskets and Vera Bradley items.

Senior site



Here's what's happening at the senior site:

o On Monday, Sept. 20, at 10:15 a.m. a "Preventing Falls" workshop is planned.

o On Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 10:15 a.m., a diabetes class with nurse Louise Wyant will be held.

o Ronda Younker's painting class will not be held this fall because too few people chose to sign up for the class.

However, she will have a class in the spring if there is enough interest.

o The senior site is looking for people to share a hobby, craft, topic, interest or musical talent with the members. Call Julie Monninger at 301-991-5052.

Did you know that on Jan. 3, 1935, a meeting was held to organize a fire company for the town of Clear Spring?

The first fire hall was rented from 1935 until it was bought in 1938.

The fire hall was where the town hall now stands. It was used as a fire hall until 1948 when it was sold to the Town of Clear Spring.
