Dementia seminar

Hagerstown Community College's Continuing Education and Community Services Division is offering a seminar called "Approaching Persons with Dementia: A Guide for First Responders," from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, in the Elliott Center on HCC's main campus off Robinwood Drive, east of Hagerstown.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a continental breakfast. A series of sessions and workshops will follow.

Professionals fee is $45, which includes breakfast, afternoon refreshments, continuing education credits, handout materials and a certificate of participation. Nonprofessionals and the general public may attend for $25 per person, and includes breakfast. Recovery resource fair

FREDERICK, Md. - A "National Recovery Month Resource Fair" will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at the Frederick County Health department, 350 Montevue Lane. The fair will feature local substance abuse and mental health provider agencies, health and wellness organizations and other social support organizations. Workshops and activities for children and families will be provided.

Dining with Diabetes programs

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The West Virginia University Extension Service is offering Dining with Diabetes program in two area locations this fall. This class is open to people with diabetes, their family members and caretakers. The classes are free but space is limited and registration is required. Participants must attend all class sessions.

Participants will learn how to prepare meals that are healthy, using less fat, salt and sugar without cutting taste. There will be an opportunity to taste a variety of main dishes, side dishes and desserts. Up-to-date information will be shared about nutrition, meal planning, exercise and understanding common diabetes-related medical tests. Recipe booklets and handouts will be given to each participant.

The WVU Jefferson County Extension Office will hold classes at its office in the Jefferson County Public Services Building, 1948 Wiltshire Road, Suite 3, Kearneysville, W.Va. on Tuesdays, Oct. 19, Nov. 2, 16 and 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. A follow up class will be held in January.

The WVU Berkeley County Extension Office is offering classes beginning Thursday, Oct. 14. The 2 1/2 hour classes will be held at Saint Luke's United Methodist Church, 700 New York Ave., in Martinsburg, W.Va. at 10:30 a.m. The series continues Oct. 21, 28, and Nov. 4, with the follow-up class in January at the same location.
