BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Hammond Brenton Shriver, 92, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at Berkeley Springs Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Born Aug. 5, 1918, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Vallie L. Hovermale Shriver.

Hammond graduated from Bath High School in 1938 and continued his education, earning a bachelor of arts degree in education from Shepherd College and his master's degree from West Virginia University.


During his career in education, he taught at Mount Airy School and was principal at the following - Morgan County Schools, Alpine School, Highland School, Pleasant View School, Spohrs Crossroads School and Berkeley Springs Annex School. In 1955, he moved to the Washington County School System in Hancock, Md., where he was principal for 22 of the 23 years. He served at Hancock Elementary, Hancock Middle and Hancock High School. He retired in 1978, having taught 38 years in Morgan County and Hancock.

Mr. Shriver was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of the Hancock Lions Club, former Kiwanis Club member, president of the Morgan County Fair and a member of the Morgan County Farm Bureau.

Hammond operated Shriver Orchards for many years and helped operate Shriver Christmas Tree Farm with his son, Sterling.

He is survived by one daughter, the Rev. Kialeen S. Potterton of Winchester, Va.; one son, Roger Sterling Shriver of Gaithersburg, Md.; two grandchildren, Denny J. Basham of Arvada, Colo., and Donna Shriver of Frederick, Md.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Marie Hovermale Shriver, in 2000; three sisters, Louise Ambrose, Mary Ziler and Eva Shriver; and one brother, Thomas Shriver.

Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kialeen Potterton officiating, assisted by Pastor Jennifer Webber. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Sept. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs.
