Road projects under way in W.Va., Pa.

September 12, 2010
  • Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. of Baltimore continues to replace a bridge on Pa. 316 south (Wayne Highway) near the Mason-Dixon Line. A Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman said the contractor will be setting the bridge beams for Phase One of the project in the next few weeks. That includes an overnight closure and detour involving Maryland routes. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of April.

Editor's note: Millions of dollars worth of road projects are under way in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and southcentral Pennsylvania. Drivers will find themselves navigating through detours and delays. The Herald-Mail will run this feature regularly on Mondays this summer and into the fall to get motorists ready for the start of the work week. Here is what to anticipate on the roads this week:

West Virginia

  • On Hostler Road (W.Va. 32/2) in Jefferson County, motorists should continue to expect occasional stopped traffic under the control of flaggers for hauling of embankment material and bridge construction.

  • Along Washington Street in the Town of Bolivar, a sidewalk project in front of Harpers Ferry Middle School is slated to start Wednesday. Occasional one-lane traffic under the control of flaggers might be in effect between Polk and Elm streets.

  • Milling starts today for a $1.9 million repair and resurfacing project on Pa. 16 in the Waynesboro area. Road crews will be working from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The entire project, which also includes Grant Street, is scheduled to be finished by Oct. 15. Most of the work will occur in Waynesboro borough.

  • In the Borough of Waynesboro, maintenance employees will be doing utility line work on East Main Street.

  • Roadwork in Mercersburg this week will affect traffic on Church and East Seminary streets. The roads will remain mostly open, although East Seminary Street might be closed intermittently.

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will be working on Corner Road, Guitner Road, U.S. 30 in Peters and St. Thomas townships, Newburg Road, Path Valley Road, Cumberland Highway, Scotland Road and Pa. 16 in Peters Township.

  • Crews continue to work on Interstate 81 at exits 14 and 16, as well as near the CSX terminal.

  • Bridges remain closed on Siloam Road, Mont Alto Road, Marsh Road, Pa. 316 south (Wayne Highway) and Pa. 997 (Anthony Highway).
