Horse industry group seeks help in wake of Charles Town stable blaze

September 12, 2010

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A horse industry group is attempting to rally support for owners and stable workers following a devastating fire in Charles Town.

The fire on Monday killed 29 horses and razed four stables next to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. The cause is under investigation.

Laura Plato of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association said it is unlikely many horse owners had insurance. Some barn owners also said they were not insured.

The local Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association is organizing charity events and accepting donations to assist owners, in addition to trainers and other track workers.
