Smithsburg fire, EMS reports

SMITHSBURG -- The Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. had 39 calls for service in August, according to the fire department's regular monthly report.

The department responded to three structure fires, three vehicle accidents with injuries, one accident involving pedestrians and three brush fires, according to the report.

The department also assisted neighboring counties three times, the report said.

Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services responded to more than 100 calls in August and department officials expect to handle more than 1,000 calls this year, according to the department's regular monthly report.

The August calls included 29 responses in Smithsburg town limits, six responses to the Leitersburg area, 10 to the Mount Aetna area, and eight calls to Cascade, Pen Mar and Fort Ritchie, according to Deputy Chief James Ulrich.

Mutual-aid calls included 10 to Frederick County, Md., four to Franklin County, Pa., 11 to the Hagerstown area and three to Clear Spring, Ulrich said. Another 27 calls were in other areas, including Greensburg, Edgemont and Cavetown, Ulrich said.
