Evan Hardy of Troop 4 in Hagerstown awarded Eagle Scout rank

The highest award in Scouting - the Eagle Scout rank - was granted to Evan David Hardy by Troop 4 of Hagerstown on May 15 at John Wesley United Methodist Church.

Scoutmaster Mike Kelly, along with members of Troop 4, conducted the opening ceremony. Scoutmaster Fred Nugent conducted the "Lighting the Eagle Trail Ceremony." Kelly also administered the Eagle Charge and presented the Eagle Badge and Evan in turn presented his mother and father with miniature Eagle pins.

Evan is the son of Mary and David Hardy of Williamsport.

State Sen. Donald F. Munson presented Evan with a resolution from the Senate of Maryland and spoke about the importance of Scouting. Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II sent a special recognition certificate on behalf of the City of Hagerstown. Ted Hull, representing Hagerstown Elks Lodge 378, presented the Americanism Award along with a U.S. Flag. Taylor Oliver presented Evan with a Certificate of Merit award on behalf of Terry Baker and the the Washington County Commissioners.


Evan started in Scouting as a Tiger Cub with Pack 17 of Williamsport. He earned all of the ranks, including the Arrow of Light, the highest Cub Scout award. He crossed the bridge into Boy Scouts with Troop 4 in 2005. He has earned 30 merit badges.

Evan has held the following leadership positions: senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, quarter master, scribe and OA representative. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow with Guneukitschik Lodge 317, serving as Troop 4 representative.

Evan's Eagle project was to build benches for Byron Memorial Park in Williamsport. It took approximately 58 manhours to complete the project. G.A. Miller Lumber Co. in Williamsport supplied the materials for the project, with support from the Williamsport Town Council and Mayor James G. McCleaf II.

Evan is a Junior at Williamsport High School. He is a member of the Williamsport National Honor Society, French Honor Society, and also is a member of the Williamsport High School cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams.

The Rev. Jewell of John Wesley United Methodist Church conducted the invocation and benediction.

Troop 4 is chartered by the Men's Class of John Wesley United Methodist Church.
