September 09, 2010

Hagerstown Community College has partnered with a newly forming local opera group, the Hub Opera Ensemble, to present a performance of G.F. Handel's Ariodante Friday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 26, at 2:30 p.m. at Kepler Theater.

The ensemble cast includes singers with international, national and regional experience from the New York and Washington, D.C., areas.

Members of the opera cast will participate in a two-part opera lecture series, offered through HCC's Continuing Education and Community Services Division. The course will be offered Saturdays, Sept. 18 and 25, from 9 a.m. to noon at Kepler Theater.

Joe Marschner, assistant professor of music at HCC, will lead the discussion that will introduce students to Baroque Opera through the close study of the opera, Ariodante. Cast members will discuss their roles and preparatory research, as well as perform arias from the piece. The $35 course fee includes admission to the full opera performance.
