Chambersburg man charged in robbery

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A Chambersburg man has been charged with robbing a Sheetz convenience store early Tuesday, the Chambersburg Police Department said.

Gerald S. Preston, 29, whose last known residence was 666 Broad St., Apt. 4, Chambersburg, was taken into custody without incident Tuesday at 10:52 p.m., police said.

He was charged with one count of robbery and was being held on $100,000 bond at Franklin County Jail on Wednesday, a jail spokeswoman said.

The robbery happened at about 2:42 a.m. at the Sheetz convenience store at 1 Monticello Court, police said. A man entered the store, showed a handgun while demanding cash, then fled on foot after receiving an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Police also were investigating three other robberies that happened Tuesday, police said.

At 10:24 a.m., police said, a man entered the Rite Aid at 415 E. Queen St., showed a handgun and demanded cash. After leaving the store with an undisclosed amount of cash, he was seen getting into a "faded" black two-door coupe, police said.


At the Quick Stop Food Mart at 641 S. Main St., a man entered the store at 12:23 p.m. and showed a handgun while demanding cash before fleeing on foot, police said.

The fourth robbery was reported at 7:07 p.m. at EJ's Grille at 346 Lincoln Way East, police said. A man approached the counter area and grabbed money from the register, police said. No weapon was displayed.
