Preston Carson Shellenberger

Preston Carson Shellenberger, born Oct. 7, 1928, the son of Spurgeon and Helen Secrist Shellenberger of York, Pa.

Preston married Barbara Remsburg, formerly of Sharpsburg, Md., in 1957. They spent most of their life in Hagerstown, Md., with the last 15 winters in central Florida.

Most of Preston's working years were spent in the business department of Hagerstown Junior College. He retired as the head of this department in 1990. His skills in teaching ranged from shorthand, typing and accounting, and later evolved into teaching computer skills. Prior to his association with the college, he taught business courses in Hancock, Md.

He was a colonel in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as a court reporter. Preston completed his undergraduate work at Shippensburg University and his graduate work at the University of Maryland.


Preston was preceded in death by brothers, Rodger and Jack; and one sister, Thelma Shellenberger Beachtel; also daughter, Karol Lynn Shellenberger Baugher.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Karen Shellenberger Poet of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Alexander and Sami Poet, and Tara Rae Baugher.

Preston "Shelly" was well-known for his enthusiasm and knowledge of tennis, as he shared this actively and factually with friends and students.

It is requested by the family that in lieu of flowers, contributions on his behalf be made to The Salvation Army, 534 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. A reception will follow at the funeral home.
