CLEAR SPRING, Md. - Hartzell Geneva Hawbaker Rohrer, 92, of 151 Cumberland St., Clear Spring, Md., died peacefully, Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at her home.

Born in Mercersburg, Pa., on March 15, 1918, the daughter of the late George Dallas and Mary Elizabeth Keefer Hawbaker.

Her husband of 47 years, Herman Samuel Rohrer, preceded her in death Dec. 19, 1983.

Hartzell loved her family and her community. Spring to fall, she could be seen on her porch swing giving a friendly wave and greeting to all who passed by.

She was a charter member of the Clear Spring Post 222 American Legion Auxiliary; Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 6241, Mercersburg, Pa.; Clear Spring Senior Citizens; a member of the Clear Spring Historical Society; and an avid card player.


Surviving are her daughter, Judith Sword of Mifflinville, Pa.; her son, Roderick Rohrer and wife, Phyllis, of Clear Spring; and special friend, Barbara Caton-Miles of Big Pool, Md. She is also survived by sisters, Edith Jane Keefer of Mercersburg, Pa., and Shirley Breakall and husband, Gary, of Hancock, Md.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Gladys Eckstine; brothers, Dean and Jack Hawbaker; and son-in-law, Jack Sword.

Burial will be private. There will be no viewing.

A memorial service will be Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 22 Cumberland St., Clear Spring. The Rev. Steven L. McCarty will officiate.
