Hagerstown to sponsor Alsatia Mummers Parade

September 08, 2010

The Hagerstown City Council said Tuesday it will again sponsor the Alsatia Mummers Parade on Oct. 30.

The Alsatia Club approached the city council asking for help to raise money for cash prizes for the parade's award categories, to promote the need for volunteers and to provide "manpower" the night of the parade, according to city documents.

The council agreed to donate $2,000 to the parade, using money from its public functions budget and, if necessary, from its unspecified agency contribution fund.

Councilman Forrest Easton was the only member to object to the request. Noting that other nonprofits had taken cuts in funding from the city, he suggested the parade do the same.

In a memo to the council, Finance Director Al Martin noted the city had donated $2,000 to the club for the last four years.
