Is your chili recipe worth $500?

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Your bowl of chili might win you $500.

The third annual Mad Anthony's chili contest will be Saturday, Oct. 2, in conjunction with Waynesboro's annual Market Day.

Sponsored by Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc., Market Day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features craft vendors, food, live music and entertainment, activities for children and sidewalk sales. The chili cook-off will be set up next to M&T Bank at Waynesboro's Centre Square. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., visitors can sample chili entries for a nominal fee and vote for their favorite.

The deadline for chili entries is Friday, Sept. 17.

First prize is $500, second is $250 and third prize is $100. The top three winners will also be awarded trophies. The People's Choice winner (based on votes by visitors) will receive $100 in gift certificates to area businesses.

A panel of judges will select first, second and third place winners based on aroma, consistency and taste of the chili.


Judges this year are Pennsylvania state Sen. Rich Alloway, Waynesboro Fire Chief Dave Martin, local chili expert Steve Monn, Mike Evans, chief underwriting officer for Frederick Mutual Insurance, and Waynesboro Borough Council President Craig Newcomer.

Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m.

The cook-off entry fee of $25 and includes a free T-shirt.
