Outdoor worship



Mount Carmel United Methodist Church invites the community to an outdoor worship service at Fort Frederick State Park pavilion Sunday, Sept. 19, at 8:45 a.m.

The service will be followed by a covered-dish lunch and an afternoon of fun and fellowship. Meat and drinks will be furnished. Attendees are asked to take lawn chairs.

The men of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church will serve community breakfasts Saturday, Sept. 18, Saturday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Big Pool Community Building from 7 to 9 a.m.

Here's what's happening at the senior site:

Thursday -- Helen Stevens will talk about "Shingles" and lead exercise, 10 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 15 -- Bingo for small prizes, 10:30 a.m.

Thursday, Sept. 16 -- Helen Stevens will talk about "Treating High Cholesterol" and lead exercise, 10 a.m.

Ronda Younker still needs people to sign up for her painting class in order to hold the class. The class is for all levels, from beginner to advanced and begins Tuesday, Sept. 21, for six to eight weeks, depending on participation.

Pancake breakfast



Wilson Ruritan will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday, beginning at 6:30 a.m.

The breakfast will be held at the club just west of Huyetts Crossroads on U.S. 40.

The menu includes pancakes with one serving of puddin' or sausage or sausage gravy, coffee and orange juice. The breakfast costs $4.50.

It will be Wilson Ruritan's first breakfast of the season. The first butchering will be Saturday, Oct. 9.

Chicken barbecue



Blairs Valley First Church of God will hold a chicken barbecue Saturday, Sept. 18, from 4 p.m. until sold out. The barbecue will be at Clopper's Grove in Blairs Valley, 13530 Blairs Valley Road.

The menu includes one-half chicken for $8.50 or one-quarter chicken for $6.50 The meal includes baked potato, green beans, applesauce, roll, tea, coffee and dessert.

Some early participants were Ted Snyder, Herman Baker, Donald Baker, Charles Clopper, John Corbett, Roy Myers and Bain Mills.

In the early years, it was done in blackface and the cast was all male.
