Sept. 8 and 22: Smithsburg Lions Club meeting, Mountain Gate Restaurant in Waynesboro, Pa., 6:30 p.m.

Sept. 11: Conrad Brooks, star of the cult classic "Plan 9 from Outer Space" will speak on his experiences in old Hollywood and what it was like to work with cult film phenomenon Ed Wood at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Smithsburg Library. Brooks will sign memorabilia.The library will show "Plan 9 from Outer Space." Seating is limited. Call 301-824-7722 to reserve a space.

Sept. 13: Smithsburg Parks and Improvement Commission, 7 p.m., Town Hall.

Sept. 14: Ringgold Ruritan Club meeting at Ringgold Ruritan Building, Windy Haven Road, 6 p.m.

Sept. 16: Bob O'Connor, author of several Civil War novels, will speak about John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Smithsburg Library. O'Connor is the author of "The Perfect Steel Trap: Harpers Ferry 1859," a historical novel surrounding the John Brown raid, trial and execution in Harpers Ferry and Charlestown, Va., in 1859.Books will be available for purchase. Sept. 20: Smithsburg Sunshine Leisure Club meeting, Trinity Lutheran Church, 11:30 a.m.

Sept. 21: Chewsville Lions Club meeting at 6:15 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church.

Sept. 25 and Sept. 26: 36th annual Smithsburg Steam Engine & Craft Show at the carnival grounds behind the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. at 22 N. Main St. The event will feature a blacksmith, flea markets, arts and crafts, a shingle mill, corn husking and grain thrashing.

Sept. 28: Smithsburg mayor and town council work session, 7 p.m., Town Hall.
