Cooler weather marks another football season

Ahhhh, sweet September! How the nights have cooled and the days have become clear. This past weekend marked the opening of high school football in the area and quite a few teams surprised us. Way to go ... and here is where you fill in your high school team!

Before you allow your calender to get too full, how about checking out some happenings and seeing if you can't squeeze them in.

Ladies of the Elks plan Pie and Cake Night

The Ladies of the Elks and Associates will be holding a Pie and Cake Night on Friday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hagerstown Elks Lodge.

Now you are talking about two if my very favorite things ... cakes and pies! Chances are only 25 cents each, and there is a great number of fabulous desserts waiting to be enjoyed.

While you are there, you can enjoy a great dinner and have some fun.

On another delicious note, for a very reasonable price, the Ladies of the Elks are offering ham and country ham sandwiches and apple dumplings. All proceeds go to local charities.

This event is open to members and their guests. The deadline to order sandwiches is Monday, Sept. 27. Sandwiches and dumplings can be picked up Oct. 4.

To order sandwiches or to get more information on the pie and cake night, please call Bev Gearhart at 301-797-1409.

It's time to start thinking about local Cub Scouts

With the children settling into a routine in school, it's time to start thinking about Scouting!

The Cub Scouts of Funkstown are having their "Roundup" on Wednesday, Sept. 8, for any young man in the first through fifth grades. It will be held at the Funkstown American Legion Pavilion at 6 p.m.

The purpose of this event is to give parents information about scouting and its benefits. Prospective Scouts can enjoy pizza while making an arrowhead necklace.
