Mail Call

September 06, 2010

"To the Hagerstown caller who says no one climbs telephone poles: I can tell you that Allegheny Power line persons at times find themselves in a position where they have to climb electric poles. Nails in poles from unauthorized posting of signs can cause injury to a line person whose climbing hook contacts a nail and causes the person to cut out and fall."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I can't believe the State Highway Administration has no solution to the problem with the turn lane from Dual Highway to Eastern Boulevard. An additional sign 'Must pull up to white line to trigger left- turn signal' might do it. I am not comfortable getting out in traffic and tapping on a stranger's window. Please come up with something to improve this situation."

- Colonial Park, Hagerstown

"Chris Shank is mailing tons of campaign literature touting his accomplishments in fighting child abusers and sexual predators. If Shank is that concerned about the safety of children, then why was he adamantly opposed to allowing TV cameras to be used in school zones to catch speeders?"

- Washington County

"I don't read the funny papers anymore. Mail Call is more humorous, sometimes bordering on hilarious."

- Hagerstown

"I think if Chris Shank gets elected, we should take the soon-to-be-vacant University of Maryland System building and rename it the Chris Shank Memorial."

- Hagerstown

"Our county and city leaders, particularly the county, need to wake up and figure out what is wrong. Now, the argument is always 'Population growth inevitably spurs economic growth.' Well, that comment is totally untenable. What makes an economy strong is productivity, not a continual population pyramid."

- Hagerstown

"If you want to know why this country's in the shape it's in, two reasons: Number one, just look in the mirror and number two, continue to read Mail Call."

- Hagerstown

"I'd just (like) to tell the people who are going to vote this year in the primaries, when they vote to make sure they know who voted in the Social Security program, who voted for the Medicare program for the people, and who voted for the kids' Medicare, and the people that also, think about if people that want to privatize - and keep taxes on for the rich, the tax cut for the rich."

- Hagerstown

"A team to cheer for: Obama, Biden, Pelosi. Yea, yea, yea."

- Hagerstown

"I was just wondering why you the editor of Mail Call don't want to put any comments in by the Maugansville caller, the lady from Maugansville. I mean, she has stated to me on different occasions that she called in comments, but her comments never make Mail Call. I was wondering what's up with that. Is it because some of her comments that she calls in are very much agreeable with my comments, the Greencastle caller?"

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Hagerstown caller, since Mail Call calls are put in anonymously, how can you possibly know that the callers who want government out of their lives are in fact living off the government? I've known some conceited egotists in my time, but you take the prize, since you apparently really do believe you have powers and abilities far beyond the rest of us mortals - which is, by the way, also extremely amusing."

- Frederick, Md.

"Does anybody remember when George W. Bush was the president and everybody complained because he went to his ranch at Crawford, Texas, a few times a year? Well, Mr. Obama went up to Martha's Vineyard at $50,000 a week. Secret Service are getting paid $1,000 a day, and that doesn't count all the people that Mrs. Obama has to take with her on her payroll, plus these other secretaries. One thing about Crawford, Texas: George Bush had free room and board. He didn't have to spend $50,000 a week. And times are bad, so this president's very unwise."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"Life is a book in volumes three; the past, the present, the future yet to be. The past is written and laid away. The present we're writing day by day. The last and best are volume three. It is locked from sight. God holds the key."

- Hagerstown

"What I wanted to tell you, that I think it's very important if you know an elderly person, to give them friendship and touching, because they will have a failure to thrive, like even a baby."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to know if, is there any programs on? All I see is commercials. We have more commercials than we have programs."

- Hagerstown

"I wanted to tell you, in case you didn't know, that Don Munson is for the veterans. And also I'd like to say Chris Shank is a showboat. He really is, people."

- Halfway
