Saints play nice in victory

SAINT JAMES -- Somewhere, Alexandria Milmoe has a big smile on her face.

All is right with the world. Her son is also grinning, and he wasn't a meanie.

Saint James coach Chris Milmoe saw his football team take care of business -- without hurting any feelings -- as the Saints used a big first half to roll to a 45-12 victory on Saturday over Options Charter School in the opener for each school.

"My mom will be happy when I call her to tell her that we won," said Saint James' third-year coach. "She always gets upset with me when we shut the other team out. She is always telling me she wants us to win, but she wants the other team able to leave the field feeling good, too."

Mission accomplished.

It didn't look possible early, as Saint James went up 45-0 in the first half and held OCS to minus-24 yards of offense and no first downs in the first half. The Panthers were playing their first-ever varsity game with a team which has only freshmen, sophomores and juniors. OCS is playing only a four-game schedule.

"I was worried," Milmoe said. "I was scanning the Internet and couldn't find anything about them. I called all over the D.C. area, and no one heard of them. I give them and their coach (Derek Deane) a lot of credit for getting the team together in a short period of time and coming here to play."

The second half almost felt as good as winning for OCS when it scored two touchdowns on a pair of catches by Malik Minor from Leon Stokley. The Panthers left the field beaten -- but they were content after putting up a fight.

Saint James' experience overwhelmed OCS's jitters, though. Consider:

* The Panthers finished with 19 penalties for 113 yards, stemming mostly from the confusion that came with their first game.

* Saint James owned a 16-0 lead after 4 1/2 minutes of play and only possessed the ball for nine seconds. The Saints put up all 45 points in the first half with only a 2:30 time of possession.

* The Saints scored on Mike Townes' runs of 6, 24 and 6 yards. They also returned a punt and an interception for scores to go with the safety. Quarterback Jamie Peterson hit Kevin McCormack for a 42-yard touchdown for the other score.

* The Saints scored all of their points on only two first downs in the first half and six in the game. They did it despite turning the ball over four times -- three on fumbles -- and failing to cover a free kick.

"It was easy, but we still made plenty of mistakes," Milmoe said. "We can't be an undefeated team if we don't eliminate mistakes."

The tone was set early, as OCS took the opening kickoff with a touchback to start at the 20. The Panthers committed three penalties and lost yardage on three plays, giving up the safety when Fred Hickman was tackled in the end zone after catching a Stokley pass.

Saint James scored twice in nine seconds, getting Townes' first 6-yard score before turning an onside kick into McCormack's touchdown catch for a 16-0 lead.

Avery Wilmore returned a punt 52 yards for a 23-0 lead after one quarter. Tommy Wagner, who also connected on five extra points, opened the second quarter with a 29-yard interception return for a touchdown. Townes capped Saint James' scoring with his other two runs.

Options Charter School got its two scores against Saint James' reserves. Stokley found Minor on a 49-yard fly pattern in the third quarter and connected on 28-yard scoring pass in the fourth period. The Panthers had two other scores called back because of penalties.

Saint James ran just 28 plays for 158 yards, led by Townes with 53 yards on six carries. The Panthers finished with 120 yards of offense, mostly on Stokley's 103 yards passing.

"In our pregame talk, we called this a journey," Milmoe said. "We have a destination we want to reach. Today was the first step."
