BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- A 26-year-old Morgan County woman was flown to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center on Saturday after being shot with a shotgun and beaten with a baseball bat, according to a West Virginia State Police press release.

Robert Alan Gretsinger, 58, of Berkeley Springs, was charged with attempted murder and malicious wounding in the incident at 1255 Pious Ridge Road, West Virginia State Police Sgt. S.E. Davis said.

Gretsinger allegedly fired several shots at Carrie Lowe after she took the keys to his truck at his home, Davis said. Gretsinger had refused to allow Lowe to borrow the vehicle, Davis said.

Lowe was shot in the upper right chest and lower back area, but continued to walk away from the residence and down the driveway toward Pious Ridge Road, Davis said.

Gretsinger then allegedly grabbed a baseball bat, caught up with Lowe and is accused of striking her several times in the head, Davis said.

Lowe was found with cuts to the upper left forehead and upper right back side of her head, Davis said. She was taken to War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, then flown to Winchester Medical Center, Davis said.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Department assisted with the investigation.
