Saints win their opener over Gaels

Kerry Kline scored a goal with 15 minutes left to break a 2-2 tie and lift Saint James to a 3-2 season-opening win over host St. Maria Goretti on Saturday.

Alyssa Glass and Mary-Kate Afzali scored first-half goals, while Rose Chiumento made 12 saves for the Saints (0-1).

Theresa Barton scored twice for Goretti (0-3).


Greencastle 1, Jefferson 1

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- Austin Ogden's unassisted goal with about two minutes left gave Jefferson a tie with Greencastle-Antrim.

Zach Faulkner scored unassisted for the Blue Devils 12 minutes into the second half.

Seth Sprague made 10 saves for Greencastle, while Ted Cohen stopped eight shots for the Cougars.


Simmons, Smith lead Hubs

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- North Hagerstown competed at the Peter Geraghty Invitational at Mount St. Mary's University on Saturday.

Emily Simmons led the girls team, placing 40th out of 188 runners on the 3.1-mile course in 21:43.3. Tyler Smith led the boys team, placing 59th out of 202 in 18:03.7.

Delaware Valley Invitational

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -- Three local runners competed for their respective colleges.

North Hagerstown graduate Taryn Shank, a sophomore running for Elizabethtown, finished second out of 195 women in 23 minutes, 57.44 seconds. Teammate Alison Harrell, a North Hagerstown graduate running her first race as a Blue Jay, finished 29th in 25:51.85. Elizabethtown beat out 17 other schools for the team title.

Williamsport graduate Tracey Forsythe, running for Delaware Valley, finished 49th in 26:51.67.Delaware Valley College finished sixth as a team.


Indiana, Pa. 10, Shepherd 0

INDIANA, Pa. -- Heather Robbins scored three goals and Melissa Kornock added two goals and an assist to lead Indiana University over Shepherd University.

Indiana also got goals from Paige Virgara, Allison Keller, Tori Pikur, Jordan Snook, and Adriana Konstantinides.

Tessa Jones made 12 saves for Shepherd (0-2).


Shepherd splits two matches

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Shepherd University split a pair of matches at the Rockhurst University Classic, losing 25-12, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19 to Tiffin in an early match before defeating Urbana, 25-18, 25-16, 25-12.

Melani Lewis had 10 kills and eight digs to lead the Rams (1-3) against Tiffin (2-1). Lauren Jeschelnik had 26 assists, eight kills and nine digs, while Kasey Mercier added eight kills and nine digs.

Kayla Walker had 12 kills, nine digs and five aces for Shepherd in the win over Urbana (0-3). Jeschelnik added 23 assists and four blocks, while Hedgesville graduate Virginia Rogus added 10 digs.
