Nicholas Antonius "Nicky" Tyssens, 87, of 17531 Cedar Lawn Drive in Hagerstown, Md., went to be with the Lord Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at his home.

Born Tuesday, Jan. 16, 1923, in Maastricht, Holland, he was the son of the late Laurentuis Tyssens and Anna Marie Hendrickx Tyssens.

He was a veteran of World War II, where he was a sergeant major in the Royal Dutch Marines.

He was a former employee of several grocery wholesale companies and also was employed by CertainTeed Corp., retiring after 15 years of service. After retirement, he was a paper carrier for The Herald-Mail Co.


He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen Tyssens; one son, Nicky Leon Tyssens and wife, Denise, of Hagerstown; daughter-in-law, Kolab Tyssens of Frederick, Md.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Roger Tyssens; and one sister, Annie Tyssens.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with Father George Limmer as celebrant. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
