HCC men continue shutout streak

Zack Morgan scored two goals and Michael Reyes had a goal and an assist as Hagerstown Community College improved to 3-0 with a win over Chesapeake.

Garrett Hajjar had a goal, Edwin Reyes and Spencer each had an assist and goalies Brian Kukucka and Derek Apple had a combined five saves for the Hawks' third straight shutout.


Susquehanna Township 49, Waynesboro 0

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Susquehanna Township held a 28-0 lead after just one quarter in its rout of Waynesboro (0-1) in the season opener for both teams.


Anthony Gelbaugh went 8-for-12 for 145 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the first quarter for Susquehanna Township (1-0). Rodney Watkins caught six passes for a team-high 125 yards, while Trent Daniels had 102 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Andy Torres scored the game's only goal as the Lions went on the road to defeat the Gaels.

Donnie Fritz made eight saves for Broadfording (3-1).

John Winalski made 14 saves for Goretti (1-2-2).

Maria Pifer had 11 service points and four kills, while Ariana Litten added 10 digs and eight service points to pace Broadfording to a 25-6, 25-23, 26-24 sweep of St. Maria Goretti.

Chelsea Foltz added seven kills and eight service points, Sarah Couch had seven kills and Kelli Crider recorded 22 assists for the Lions (3-1).

Jean Hogan had 14 assists, Mary Hackney and Jessica Swarner added four aces each and Hannah Geesaman had five kills for the Gaels (0-2).

Shalom 3, Fannett-Metal 1

FANNETTSBURG, Pa. -- Stacey Thrush led Shalom with 10 service points, including seven aces, six kills and 22 digs as the Flames defeated Fannett-Metal, 25-15, 17-25, 25-23, 25-21.

Holly Andreine had seven blocks, five kills, four aces and 23 digs, Rebekah Mowen added 15 service points, eight aces and 16 digs and Ashlyn Blank had five kills and 22 digs for Shalom. Karlee Wise had 14 service points and 17 digs and Kelsey Ebersole added 10 service points and nine assists in the win.


Phillips, Garns win races

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Waynesboro senior Kyle Phillips and Greencastle-Antrim freshman Nikki Garns were the champions at the annual season-opening Enos Yeager Invitational.

Phillips won the boys race, topping the field of 130 runners (eight teams) in 12:48 on the challenging 2.3-mile course. Chambersburg's Dan Patti was second in 12:52.

Garns won the girls race in 15:51, beating runner-up McKenzie Doyle of Chambersburg by 10 seconds.


Rams start 0-2 at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Shepherd University opened its season by dropping a pair of matches to No. 17 Wayne State 25-19, 25-22, 25-12 and host Rockhurst 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 in the first day of the Rockhurst University Volleyball Classic.

In the loss to Wayne State, Kasey Mercier had 14 kills and seven digs, Kayla Walker had nine kills and eight digs and Lauren Jeschelnik had 16 assists and five digs.

In the loss to Rockhurst, Meg Kenny had six kills and Walker and Melani Lewis had 10 digs each for the Rams (0-2).


Quinn 31st in season opener

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- American University's Kellie Quinn, a Williamsport graduate, placed 31st in 21:42 at the season-opening Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals.
