Leopards dominate line, Huskies in opener

September 04, 2010|By TIM KOELBLE

SMITHSBURG -- The Smithsburg football team had the type of season opener that left head coach Buddy Orndorff smiling at the conclusion of a 27-0 victory over Northern Garrett on Friday night at Carroll Reid Field.

The Leopards stopped Northern Garrett defensively on the Huskies' first possession, and the offense rode the workhorse effort of Ben Daniels on its first possession.

Daniels gained 55 yards on the first scoring drive, including a 4-yard run off left tackle with 5:32 left for his first of two TDs.

"We had an ideal gameplan tonight," said Ornodorff. "We beat them on the line on both sides."

Daniels, who finished with 101 yards on 19 carries, scored again in the second period from the 2 to cap a 71-yard drive, highlighted by Justin Scott's 52-yard pass-and-run connection with Luke Slick.

"We won on the line," said Daniels. "I just ran north and south and Dylan Eyler really did a good job blocking for me."

Smithsburg kept its momentum coming out of halftime, taking the kickoff and driving 70 yards. The march ended on a 1-yard run by Derek Smith, who picked up the majority of rushes in the second half and ended with 53 yards on nine totes.

The Leopards added a fourth-quarter score when Brad Spicker plunged 1 yard, capping a 65-yard drive. Scott connected with Thomas Smith on a 26-yard pass to set up the score.

"Justin threw some nice passes," said Orndorff.

Smithsburg's defense held the Huskies from crossing midfield on seven of nine possessions. The Rams gained 59 yards rushing on 29 carries and ended with 156 total yards, 55 on the last drive before the game ended on the Leopards' 7.

"The defense set the tone early," said Orndorff. "Our middle linebackers (Robert) Hogue and (Ryan) Delauter had big stops." Each had key sacks early in the game and Daniels and Cullan Ganley also had interceptions.

"As a team, we did a very good job of tackling and I'm pleased with that," said Orndorff. "We didn't do that last year in the first game against Northern."

Hogue also got some work in rushing the football and he responded with 42 yards as the Leopards churned out 241 yards rushing and 345 overall.
