Senior center open house

On Wednesday, Sept. 15, the senior center at Girls Inc. will host an open house. Girls Inc. is at 626 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown.

The open house is for all seniors ages 55 and older.

The following classes will be available:

o 9 to 10 a.m. - "Walk Away the Pounds"

o 9 a.m. to noon - Computer instruction (to be held on second floor)

o10 to 11 a.m. - Line dancing

o10 a.m. to noon - Group piano

o 10 a.m. to noon - Painting with acrylics and oil

oNoon to 1 p.m. - Light refreshments will be served with piano music

o12:30 to 2 p.m. - Bead jewelry making


o1 to 2 p.m. - Chair yoga strength training

Yard sale to aid Humane Society

On Saturday, Sept. 25, Sagittarius Salon & Spa will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with all proceeds going to the Humane Society of Washington County. Items such as clothes, furniture and home furnishings will be for sale.

The yard sale will be held at the salon at 1136 Conrad Court.

Howard's plans art contest

Howard's Art Supplies and Frames will host the fifth annual Art for the Animals Challenge art contest.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Humane Society of Washington County. Submissions are open to local artists of all ages and talent levels.

People's choice voting will begin Oct. 9 and will continue through Oct. 16. The opening reception will be at Howard's Saturday, Oct. 16, starting at 6:30 p.m. Howard's is at 1256 Dual Highway in Hagerstown. People's choice voting will end that evening.

For a contribution of $1, each artist will receive a 5-by-7 canvas donated by Tara Fredrix Co. The finished canvases must be returned to Howard's by Oct. 2. At that time, the entries will be framed with frames donated by framing suppliers and entered into a silent auction that will begin Oct. 9 and end Oct. 27.

Winning bidders will be notified by Howard's. Artists are encouraged to create art in any media that will fit onto the canvas.

Yard sale

The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association will hold a community yard sale at the school Saturday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The first home football game will be Friday at School Stadium, starting at 7 p.m.
