Police probe armed robbery, assault

The Hagerstown Police Department on Tuesday was investigating an armed robbery and assault Monday night in the 1100 block West Church Street.

Shortly before 11 p.m., officers were called to Wakefield Road for a report of a robbery and interviewed two victims, police said. The victims said they were walking on West Church Street near Alexander Street when they were approached by a man who asked them for a cigarette, police said.

One of the victims said "no" and they continued walking, but the man grabbed one of them from behind by the hair and pulled the victim to the ground, police said. The man put a knife to the victim's throat and told the other victim to give him money and cigarettes, police said.

The second victim dropped cigarettes and a checkbook while the man searched the other victim's pockets, police said.

The second victim fled and called 911, police said. The man released the first victim and fled east on West Church Street, police said.

One victim had minor neck injuries, police said.

The man was described as black with a stocky build, in his 30s and between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, police said. He was wearing a white T-shirt, dark khaki shorts and a dark baseball cap, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the Hagerstown City Police Criminal Investigation Division at 301-790-3700, ext. 234.
