Blazers aim for record over .500

CLEAR SPRING -- Ask Clear Spring football coach Craig Bathgate if the Blazers can match their 5-5 record from last year and the answer is clear cut.

"I hope it's above .500," said Bathgate. "If we can avoid injuries, we think we can win."

Until last year, hoping for just one win seemed to be the norm for Clear Spring. Now, it's a continued attitude that helps make football a topic of conversation around the school and in the community.

"You go 5-5 and it is tremendous for the program," said senior running back Mike Etzel. "We want to continue winning this year and try to pass it on. We don't want everyone talking just about soccer (during football season)."

Etzel will be one of the main cogs for Clear Spring, which lost such key players as Ken Bosic, Corey Morgan and the injured Wes Jackson to graduation.

"I'm comfortable with our offense," said the 5-foot-9, 170-pound Etzel, who started seven games and rushed for 608 yards and five touchdowns.

"We want to give (Mike) the opportunity with 20, 25 touches of the ball," said Bathgate.

Bosic was the second-leading tackler in the area and Jackson had 568 yards when he was injured in the third game of the season.

Adam Mellott will return at quarterback. The 5-11, 190-pound junior threw for five TDs and had a rating of 102.5 last year. His favorite target was Sam Adams (6-1, 195), who had 17 receptions last year in his junior season.

The Blazers again will feature the wing-T offensively and work from a 4-4 defensive set. They have six returning offensive starters and three on defense.

Elwood, who will also run out of the backfield, should be one of the defensive leaders at middle linebacker, alongside Etzel.

"(Sam) is quick and smart and should be the strength," said Bathgate.

Anchoring the defensive line will be senior ends Arthur Bosic (5-11, 215) and Brandon Mullins (5-11, 205).

"We're young, we've got two sophomores and a junior in the defensive backfield," said Bathgate.

There are only 24 players in uniform to begin the season. Seven are seniors.

"The numbers are a little down right now but I think they'll grow with the number of sophomores and freshmen in the program," said Bathgate. "We're a little smaller in size, but we've got much faster overall team speed."

Sporting new uniforms, the Blazers will play six of their 10 games on the road.
