August 30, 2010

Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education will offer art classes in mediums such as chair caning, rug hooking, calligraphy and stained-glass art.

o "Learn the Heritage Craft of Chair Caning" is taught by HCC instructor Jo Lum of Living Waters Chair Caning. Students will learn how to restore items such as rocking chairs, footstools and dining room chairs through the art of seat weaving. Materials may be purchased from the instructor.

Students are asked to bring the following supplies: scissors, towel, measuring tape, bucket, pencil, a dozen clothespins and paper. Two sections of this course are offered. The first section meets on Thursdays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Little Antietam Community Center, from Sept. 23 through Nov. 11. The second section meets on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Valley Mall Center, from Sept. 21 through Nov. 9. Cost is $83 or $50 for seniors, plus $5 registration fee.

o "Basic Rug Hooking" is taught by Shelly Martin, whose work has been featured in Rug Hooking Magazine. This is not latch hook, but the old-fashioned art of pulling loops of wool fabric through a burlap backing. Participants must bring embroidery scissors and a 12-inch wooden embroidery hoop. The class is offered Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at HCC's Valley Mall Center. The fee is $45, plus $60 materials fee and $5 registration fee.

o "Copperplate One" is an introductory calligraphy course.

These letters are done with a pressure-sensitive pointed nib pen. A materials kit with all copperplate supplies may be purchased in the first class for $20. The course is offered on Mondays, from Sept. 20 through Oct. 11. The fee is $65, plus a $5 registration fee.

o "Introduction to Stained Glass - Lead Came Method" is taught by Mary Lemen, owner of The Glass Loft. In this method, pieces of stained glass are embedded into the channels of the came and the joints are soldered together. The class is offered on Saturdays, Sept. 18 through Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Advanced Technology Center at HCC. The fee is $95, plus $48 for materials and a $5 registration fee.

o "Introduction to Stained Glass - Snowflake" is also taught by Lemen. The class project will focus on the copper-foil method of stained-glass construction. Participants must bring safety glasses, a dust mask and latex gloves. Due to lead exposure, pregnant women are advised not to participate. The class will be offered on Saturdays, Oct. 30 through Dec. 11 (no class on Nov. 27), from 9 a.m. to noon. The fee is $95, with a $45 materials fee and $5 registration fee.
