Shepherd topples Ship in opener

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Fullback Bobby Humphries ran for touchdowns of 66 and 20 yards in the fourth quarter Saturday to lead Shepherd to a 35-27 win over Shippensburg in the Great Valley Classic.

The Rams (1-0) racked up 532 yards of total offense as they won their sixth consecutive season opener against the Red Raiders.

Kevin Clancy completed 18 of 30 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns for Shepherd, while Nate Hoyte ran for a game-high 93 yards on 16 carries. Humphries chipped in 90 yards on only three rushes.Robert Byrd had five receptions for 94 yards.

Steven Adams threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shippensburg (0-1). Bryan Barley had two of the scoring catches and racked up 101 yards receiving, but the defending PSAC champions were limited to 77 rushing yards.

Shepherd led 14-0 after one quarter, but Ship rallied to knot the game at 14-14 at intermission. Humphries' fourth quarter touchdowns stretched the Rams lead from 21-20 to 35-20.
