August 29, 2010

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- Two Martinsburg, W.Va., residents were taken to area hospitals Saturday after the ATV they were riding went into the mouth of Back Creek near the Potomac River.

Roger Barron, captain of the Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co., said an 18-year-old female was operating the ATV when it went over the embankment and into the creek.

The female was flown to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center with unknown injuries, Barron said.

A 19-year-old male passenger also went into the creek, Barron said.

The male was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg with unknown injuries, he said.

The names and conditions of the two people injured in the accident were unavailable Saturday night.

The Berkeley County Office of Emergency Services and Emergency Ambulance Authority also assisted with the rescue, Barron said.
