Howard's hosts art contest to benefit animal shelter

August 27, 2010

Howard's Art Supplies and Frames is hosting the fifth annual Art for the Animals Challenge fundraiser to benefit the Humane Society of Washington County. Submissions are open to local artists of all ages and talent levels.

People's choice voting will begin Oct. 9 and continue through Oct. 16.

The opening reception for the event will be at Howard's at 1256 Dual Highway in Hagerstown Saturday, Oct. 16, from 6:30 p.m.until closing. Voting will end that evening.

For a contribution of $1, each artist will receive a 5-by-7 canvas donated by Tara Fredrix Co. The finished canvases must be returned to Howard's by Oct. 2. At that time, they will be framed with frames donated by framing suppliers and entered into a silent auction that will begin Oct. 9. The auction will end Oct. 27. Winning bidders will be notified by Howard's. Artists are encouraged to create art in any media that will fit onto the canvas.

The idea of Ellen and Roger Collins of Howard's, the fundraiser has become an annual art extravaganza that serves as a venue for novice and seasoned artists who are eager to help animals in need.

"Our local artists are always happy to help out the animal shelter," said Ellen Collins of Howard's. "We are honored to act as the facilitator for this tremendous art show and fundraiser."

The proceeds from the sale of the canvases and the winning auction bids will be donated by Howard's to the shelter.
