Library gets grant to offer programs on nation's history

August 26, 2010

Washington County Free Library has announced it has been awarded a "Let's Talk About It: Picturing America" grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The grant enables the library to present community programs that incorporate the artwork in the Picturing America Collection.

Local musicians and educators Jennie Avila and Stephen Wright have collaborated to produce a series of programs based on themes in the collection that integrate music and the arts.

All programs are free and open to the public.

The first in the series will be Sunday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. at Washington County Arts Council, 14 W. Washington St. in Hagerstown.

The topic for the program is the Civil War and will feature Avila's original Civil War music along with a discussion highlighting prints from the Picturing America Collection.
