Roy Clinton Smith Jr., 75, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at C.J.'s Assisted Living Center, Hagerstown, Md.

Born March 6, 1935, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Roy Clinton and Goldie May (Gross) Smith Sr. He was preceded in death by his companion of 45 years, Hilda Jean Lewis, who died in 2005.

Roy was a security officer for the District Court of Maryland for more than 30 years. He later retired from the Washington County Roads Department with more than 17 years of service.

Roy was a past member of the Red Men Club, Williamsport, and the Hagerstown Moose Club. He attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.


Roy is survived by a daughter, Sharon K. Needy, and a sister, Betty Martz, both of Hagerstown; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by a sister, Natalie Frederick; and two brothers, Harold Smith and Richard D. Smith.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. The Rev. Quentin J. Fleming will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to CJ's Assisted Living Center, 145 King St., Hagerstown, MD 21740 or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
