Mail Call

August 25, 2010

"To the caller concerned about the campaign posters in the cemetery: Well, the dead have been known to vote now and then."

- Knoxville, Md.

"To the caller who won't patronize Washington County businesses due to a Republican sign: Further reinforces my thoughts that Democrats and/or liberals cannot have a logical conversation on matters of importance, and can only attack people with views which are different from their own."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to comment on making the mistake of voting for Barack Obama as president. I do not intend to vote for him in re-election when the voting comes again in a couple of years, and I think people like Hillary Clinton should be running for office next term. So might be a good idea to have a lady leading the country. Who knows what would happen if a lady was the president of the U.S., Hillary Clinton. Might be something worth looking into or thinking about, so."

"Hagerstown caller, how can you claim we pro-lifers don't care about children and do nothing to help them, when you can't possibly know more than a few of us? Are obviously unaware of our charitable activities and the contributions we make. And I, I'm truly outraged and insulted that you actually dare claim we would ignore abused and molested children and not report such horrendous crimes to the proper authorities. I don't think or would never claim that pro-choicers don't care about children and ... would ignore crimes committed against them."

- Frederick, Md.

"This is on Democrats and Republicans, in response to a person from Williamsport saying that they're a registered Democrat all their life, but they need to register as a Republican for the primaries to stop Shank and vote for Munson. I'm a Republican, and I voted for Munson for years, but he's a head of taxation and everything else, but I don't see Washington County doing anything for the people in Washington County or the city of Hagerstown on taxes. He hasn't helped anything here, so I'm going to vote for Shank, so - and I am a Republican."

- Hagerstown

"I ask you again, is society fair with its citizens, in the way punishment is put out for broken crimes? Just heard on TV that a man served 12 years in prison for stealing food from a church so he could eat. Yet we have these politicians and these Wall Street people, it goes on and on and on, stealing billions and billions and billions of dollars, and they get a slap on the wrist. It just doesn't quite seem fair."

- Sharpsburg

"As an employee of the Washington County Sheriff's Department, please vote for Jim Woods."

- Hagerstown

"With all due respect, the Republican Party, as it is in the General Assembly, constitutes one big clique. Who in the world would want to be elected to the leadership of a clique? Besides that, one of those leaders had something to do with bull testicle legislation - foolish."

- Hagerstown

"A contradiction that I keep thinking about when reading Mail Call is the many people saying that government should keep out of people's lives, and the many people asking for government to do this and do that. They want leash laws, noise laws, trashy home laws, etc. Guess we want government to help when it serves our purposes."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Regarding the Hagerstown caller about the mosque at Ground Zero: President Obama did not agree that they should build the mosque. Rather he said the Constitution provides the right of everyone to practice their chosen religion. He specifically said he would not offer his opinion on the wisdom of putting the mosque in this location. And by the way, it is not planned for the Ground Zero land but at least a couple of blocks away. The caller mentioned that a plane flew into D.C. (Pentagon) also. Well, if he read today's paper (9/19) he will see that Muslims also pray in the Pentagon."

- Smithsburg

"I saw a miracle on Aug. 19. A WCBOE school bus crossed the exempt spur track at the paper recycling without first stopping. DOT supervisor at the BOE, Monday morning review is needed. Locked gate at one end of track and train-high weeds at other, but COMAR of Annapolis says 'stop' because rail tops are visible and shiny. Transmission repair shops love it. At least the driver has some sense."

- Hagerstown

Washington County has people in positions making six-figure salaries, yet we have to hire outside firms to oversee what they do every time. You turn around and it's an outside firm to do what you get paid for. Shape up."

- Sharpsburg

"Show you how radical this president really is, the American public, 70 percent, against having a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero, President Obama says it's OK. Everything he wants, the American people don't want. Oh, and by the way, have a nice vacation, and remember the baseball saying, 'One, two, three strikes, you're out'? Well, this is about your fifth or sixth."

- Williamsport
