Mail Call

August 24, 2010

"To the caller complaining about her son in the county jail eating at 3:30: They don't eat at 3:30. They eat later. And something should be done about it. Her son should not go to jail. Then he can eat dinner whenever he wants."

- Hagerstown

"I'm a community organizer. I organized a work crew to pick up trash from the highways around Sharpsburg, and then after I'm done that, I'm planning on running for president of the United States. So I'll be expecting a lot of votes from all the South County people."

- Sharpsburg

"I had a nephew come from out of town, and I had a problem, and I called 911 and they came right away, the two gentlemen did, and they came to help me and I really, really appreciate it."

- Halfway

"I want to thank Cindy Shank for ... her award-winning recipe for cookie-crusted peach cobbler. I made it and it's delicious, and I thank her. Thank you for putting the recipe in the newspaper."

"Thank you, Mail Call, for putting up our street sign, Redwood Drive and Edgewood. I just called in and it's already up, so thank you very much. I don't know who's responsible, but I really appreciate it. Actually, it was dangerous, because for ambulances and things like that, if the streets aren't marked it can make it bad."

- Hagerstown

"Did Newt Gingrich return to school to teach morality and ethics or is he still a Republican?"

- Boonsboro

"I wonder if the people now calling for religious freedom and tolerance are the same people who object to Christmas trees, Nativity scenes and 'Merry Christmas?'"

- Hagerstown

"As the U.S. troops filter out of Iraq, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the 4,440-plus souls who offered the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Your service will not soon be forgotten."

- Cavetown

"Hey, Funkstown, why are you blaming new Mayor Crampton? He did not change the trash collections, the town council changed trash collections. As far as no notification, if you read the paper at all, it was in every article about Funkstown for the last two months. Yes, it could have been handled better, but then again, you would have complained about that also."

- Hagerstown

"I don't believe any money should go outside this country as yet. There's too much that needs to be done here. If the president and the politicians want to, they can donate from their own pockets, but don't tax the Americans and the American people to take care for those who want to harm us or who are against us."

- Hagerstown

"I, too, miss the days that Lloyd Waters wrote about on the 15th. I really do. I wish I could go back to those days."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling because I can't understand how they can build a mosque on the site ... Ground Zero in New York City. That is the height of insensitivity. There were Muslims that killed thousands of innocent people who were doing nothing more than doing their job on that day."

- Hagerstown

"To those of you who have outside cats who are killing songbirds: My best advice is buy a collar with a bell on it, and you may protect bird wildlife."

- Sharpsburg

"As a business owner who has never put a political sign in my workplace, I find it quite upsetting that some hateful, un-American liberal now bases their purchases not on quality or customer service, but on their political views. I can tell you for a fact the GOP is much more small business-friendly. Have a nice day on Nov. 2."

- Hagerstown

"This is just a great big thank you to those patient people out there who respect the handicapped parking spaces. I was in your world up until a couple of years ago, and now that I'm in the handicapped world, I can tell you, those spaces are a godsend. I know it's frustrating to have to walk across the parking lot when those spaces are empty, but you'll get your reward someday. Remember and read Galatians chapter 6, verses 9 and 10. Your reward will await you for your patience. Thanks again."

- Hagerstown

"Calling in reference to Thursday, Aug. 19, the lady from Hagerstown made a comment about her son is in Washington County jail and they only feed, they feed him supper at 3:30 in the afternoon, and she wants to know how many people eat supper and eat dinner. Excuse me, but if there's breakfast, lunch, and some people call dinner 'dinner,' or supper 'dinner'; the evening meal is called either supper or dinner, so you eat your three meals. Obviously she doesn't know this. And I wish I had the life that they have in prison."

- Smithsburg

"Seems we have a new speedway in town. When cars come from Marsh Pike and Leitersburg Pike toward Northern, they can see if two lights are green - then they step on it. I have seen two cars side by side, racing down this road. You have a lot of cars exiting from Long Meadow Shopping Center and Stone (House Square). Please check these speeders out before there is a terrible accident. They go about 60 mph."

- Hagerstown

"Unemployment remains high, wages continue to go down, people are hurting, and all Chris Shank can do is put out a four-page color flier of his proposal to stop illegal immigration? It's about priorities. He obviously doesn't have them. He is trying to tug at the emotional heartstrings of people and dodge the issues. Go, Munson."

- Hagerstown

"So let me get this straight. As a plumber, you call me with an emergency. Your pipes have broken and your house is flooding. I should not ask your name and address, but rather your political affiliation. Hope you can swim."
