SMITHSBURG, Md. - Dorsey J. Lovell, 91, of Smithsburg, died Aug. 20, 2010, at Ravenwood Nursing Home in Hagerstown, where he was a resident for almost one year.

He was born June 27, 1919, in Garfield, and was raised there on the family farm. He was the son of Luella I. Smith Lovell and J. Floyd Lovell.

He was the husband of the late Martha M. Kuhn Lovell, whom he married in 1941.

Mr. Lovell graduated from Middletown High School and Columbia Business College of Hagerstown.

He was employed by Hagerstown Lumber Co. as an estimator until coming back to the family farm to work. He farmed there until a back injury, at which time he changed professions to the banking industry with the Thurmont Bank. After mergers of the bank, he retired in 1983 from the Suburban Bank (now Bank of America) after 27 years of service. He held the position of vice president and branch manager of the Cascade branch at that time. He also was employed with Mid-State Building Supply until 1989.

He was a lifelong member of Garfield United Methodist Church and served in many capacities.

Surviving is one son, Larry K. Lovell and wife, Beverly, of Smithsburg; grandson, David L. Lovell and wife, Misti, of Myersville; stepgrandson, Neil L. Frey and wife, Debbie, of Waynesboro; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Lovell, Cody Frey and Lindsey Frey; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sisters, Rachel Athey and Ellen Holter; and brother, J. Rudolph Lovell.

The family wishes to thank all who so faithfully visited Dorsey at Ravenwood Nursing Home. Also, thanks to all of the staff at Ravenwood for the extremely wonderful care they provided to him and his family.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Garfield U.M. Church with Pastor Tiffany Kromer officiating. Interment will be in the Garfield U.M. Church Cemetery.

Family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Garfield U.M. Church, 13628 Stottlemyer Road, Smithsburg, MD 21783, Attn: John King, treasurer.
