Travelogue series

The Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown will begin its 36th season of the Travelogue Adventure Series this fall at the South Hagerstown High School auditorium beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The series includes six programs:

Sept. 15 - "The Great Rocky Mountain RV Adventure"

Oct. 6 - "Israel Today"

Nov. 10 - "Northern Europe"

Feb. 23 - "Burma and Cambodia"

March 16 - "Egypt"

April 13 - "Natural Wonders of the Northeast Coast"

At the presentation, travelers share their experiences in each location, highlighting customs and cultures from many lands.

The Travelogue Series is a community-service project of the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown. On average, 250 to 300 individuals attend each program.


E. Russell Hicks volleyball

There will be a meeting this evening for E. Russell Hicks Middle School girls who are interested in playing volleyball. The meeting will be held in the gymnasium at 7 p.m. Parents are urged to attend.

Yard sale

A yard sale to benefit Washington County Community Action Council will be Saturday, Sept. 11, from 6 a.m. to noon at the pavilion at the Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84 in Williamsport.

Tables will be available to rent for $15 (per table) under the pavilion. You also can bring your own tables and set up outside the pavilion for $10 per table. Setup begins at 5 a.m.

Breakfast and lunch will be served at the concession stand and a bake sale table will be available.

All proceeds from table sales, as well as the concession stand and bake sale, will benefit Washington County Community Action Council.

The yard sale will be held at 16129 Lappans Road.

Tuesday - Maryland Del. Andrew Serafini will give a talk on "What's Happening in the State?

Discovery Station

Saturday - Dave Kaplan, "Mr Butterfly," will present "Butterfies in the Summer" at Discovery Station at 2 p.m.

Hagerstown Lioness Club

The regular meeting of the Hagerstown Lioness Club will be Thursday, Sept. 2, at the Academy Theatre Banquet & Conference Center in downtown Hagerstown.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will include the club's scholarship recipients and their families. The 2010-11 budget will be presented.

Treasure Sale

The Singer Society of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts will hold its 11th annual Treasure Sale on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Items are now being accepted for the sale. If you have "treasures" you no longer want ... art- works, china, crystal, silver, furniture, rugs, games, costume jewelry ... anything but clothing and appliances, bring them to the museum or call 301-739-5727 for pick-up service. All donations are tax-deductible.

The preview reception will be Friday, Nov. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m.

There will be a silent auction of specific items, entertainment and refreshments.

Admission for the preview costs $20 and includes a $5 coupon for Saturday's purchases of $35 or more.

Class of 1968

The South Hagerstown High School class of 1968 will gather at Beaver Creek Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m.

Child-care discussions

Washington County Child Care Providers will meet Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Paramount Church on Longmeadow Road.

The group will meet until November to discuss topics about child care. The first meeting will be about children's behavior.

Motorcycle ride

On Saturday, Throttles Bar and Grill, at 236 Cumberland St. in Clear Spring, will hold the third annual Michelle Younker Memorial Ride to benefit the Humane Society of Washington County.

The ride is being held by Wanda and Sam Mills of Throttles in honor of their friend, Michelle Younker, who passed away in August 2005.

"Michelle never had kids. She had two or three Great Danes all the time and just loved her dogs," Sam Mills said. "We wanted to do something in her honor and we think holding this ride to benefit the shelter is something she would have liked."

"This is a really nice way to honor Michelle's memory and her love of animals," said Paul Miller, the shelter's executive director.

"We are honored that Wanda and Sam would include us."

Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the ride starts at noon. A light meal will be served at Throttles at the end of the ride and a DJ will provide entertainment. A $10 donation is requested and all proceeds from the ride will benefit the Humane Society.

Group to meet

Neighborhoods 1st Locust Point will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Congregation B'Nai Abraham meeting room. The synagogue is at 53 E. Baltimore St. in Hagerstown.

Fun night

The Bob Evans restaurant at 190 Railway Lane in Hagerstown will hold a community fun night for the Humane Society of Washington County today from 5 to 8 p.m.

A donation of 15 percent of the sales will be made to the shelter for each bill that is presented with the approved Bob Evans flier.
