Search committee formed to hire new recreation director

August 23, 2010

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- A four-member search committee has been appointed to find a replacement for longtime executive director Tim Barr, according to Paul Marshall, president of the Jefferson County Parks & Recreation Commission.

Barr, who led the agency since the mid-1990s, was dismissed from his position during an executive session earlier this month.

The search committee consists of commission members Heather Morgan, Louis Tiano, Jim Pierson and Gene Taylor. The commission's board has 11 members, Marshall said Monday.

Lauren Thurston, operations manager for the agency, is serving as acting director until a replacement for Barr is found.

During the same executive session, the commission voted to suspend with pay Jennifer Myers, assistant director of the JCPRC.

The members also voted to ask West Virginia State Police to look into the agency's books.

Barr's salary was listed "at around $60,000 a year" and Myers earns about $40,000, a board member has said.

Thurston is the commission's third full-time employee.
