Ms. Kim Inid Coker, 62, of Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, Va., in the presence of her loving family.

Born Oct. 7, 1947, in Hagerstown, Kim was the daughter of Mary R. Messersmith and the late Maurice L. Messersmith.

She was the loving mother of two children: Master Sgt. Shaun J. Coker, his wife Sandy, and their son Connor, who are stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, and Georgie Hall, her husband Brad, and their two children Caroline and Charlie, who reside in Rome, Ga.

She is survived by three sisters, George St. Michael of Vienna, Va., Jan Motz and her husband Jack Motz of Vienna, and Bettina Messersmith of Hagerstown; and one brother, Maurice L. Messersmith Jr. and his wife Bonnie Wilkens of Fairfield, Pa.

Kim graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shepherd College. She went on to receive Montessori diplomas in both primary and elementary education.


Kim was dedicated to the Montessori method of teaching. She was the owner of Montessori Children's House in Signal Mountain, Tenn., and taught at the Montessori School of Rome in Georgia, Hagerstown Children's School and Frederick Country Day Montessori School. She courageously battled breast cancer for 14 years before she succumbed.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with a gathering to follow. A private interment will be held at the family's convenience.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a memorial in Kim's name that will be placed at The Montessori School of Rome, The Kim Coker Memorial Fund, c/o CCMC, Vienna, VA 22182 or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, c/o Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Attention: Donor Services, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309.
