Fire at Back Creek Valley home is being investigated

August 20, 2010

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- A fire Friday afternoon that destroyed a two-story home in the small Back Creek Valley community of Jones Springs, W.Va., remained under investigation, according to Back Creek Valley Fire Co. Assistant Chief John Chapman.

The wood-frame residence at 156 Townsend Ridge Road off Back Creek Valley Road was fully involved when Chapman arrived on the first fire truck to reach the scene, he said.

The family was not home and no one was injured fighting the blaze, which was reported about 2:30 p.m., Chapman said.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Tax Office records indicate the property is owned by Raymond and Diana Seibert, but Chapman said he could not confirm they were the owners.

Firefighters from Back Creek were joined by volunteers from Hedgesville, Baker Heights, Bedington, South Berkeley and Berkeley Springs fire departments, Chapman said. The Berkeley County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management also responded to assist, Chapman said.

The fire was about nine miles from Back Creek Valley's station, Chapman said.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the family, Chapman said.

The state fire marshal's office was contacted to assist with the investigation, Chapman said.
