Mail Call

August 20, 2010

"I would like to congratulate the Hilltop Fellowship Church in Clear Spring, Md., for the wonderful community outreach they hosted on Saturday. It was very well-organized, and I know a lot of hard work went into it. They had very nice sponsors, also. May God's blessings be to you all." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the people that's calling about people stealing items from their yards. The people that are doing that aren't intelligent enough to read Mail Call." - Clear Spring

"I would like to thank Cindy Shank for her recipe on cookie-crusted peach cobbler. It was very good. Congratulations on your publication." - Hagerstown

"To everyone upset with the proposed construction of an Islamic culture center two blocks from Ground Zero: Are you aware of this fact? There is a mosque, Masjid Manhattan, located four blocks from Ground Zero. Built in 1970, it pre-dates the construction of the World Trade Center." - Greencastle, Pa.

"I see where President Obama endorses the Muslim mosque and prayer center to be built near Ground Zero. What a slap in the face to our country and to the city of New York. I hope and pray to God above that Obama is a one-termer because he does not belong in the office. He's the wrong man for the job, and I just cannot wait until the next election to get him out." - Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I too agree that starting school Aug. 18 is totally ridiculous. It should be started after Labor Day, and I can guarantee you if you look at the school calendar when we get them, they'll be starting Aug. 17 next year." - Washington County

"I just read the article on humane officer Buck Hessler. God bless him for the job that he's doing. Keep up the good work. Those of us that love animals thank you from the bottom of our hearts." - Greencastle, Pa.

"I would like to thank the two angels that paid my bill to have my car ignitions fixed. ... My husband's in a nursing home, and when I went in to pay my bill, they had told me that two angels came in and paid it for me, and that was really a blessing. I'd also like to thank the people at work that tried to get my car fixed for me. And again, I want to thank the two angels ... and thank everybody at work that's been so understanding while I go through this." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Hats off to Tiffany Arnold for the A9 Monday, Aug. 16, 'You're never too old for shots.' Very good; it's nice that somebody explained that, but I would like to find out one thing. I checked with the Health Department last year when I got the influenza shot. Where can you get the yellow fever, malaria, cholera and typhoid, when you're going over to Third World nations? The Health Department says they can't do it. Who could do it locally?" - Leitersburg

"To the person in Hagerstown who thinks that Mail Call should not be put in the paper: Nobody's twisting your arm to read it. If you don't like it, don't read it." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'm not sure where this is at in the U.S., but I just heard on TV where some kids in school have to furnish their own toilet paper. I think that's a downright shame. If our country doesn't change direction and quit giving away to the rest of the world, we're going to be in a lot of trouble. As a matter of fact, we already are. We have to get some sensible politicians in there that can handle our money and do what's right for America, not the bunch that's in there now." - Sharpsburg

"This is to the Clear Spring caller stating that the corrections officers are blaming shortages on the escapes. You have no idea what these men and women endure on a daily basis. Yes, it is a job, not a job that is having constant pay cuts and manpower loss. But with people like you, it is job security." - Hagerstown

"Well, they're getting the oil cleaned up down there in the Gulf, and things are starting to get back to normal - maybe not fast enough for some, but at least it's getting back to normal. But now the politically motivated people are coming out and saying how there's going to be long-term mental things going wrong with these people that work down there, long-term physical things wrong with them. It's unbelievable what people will do just to stir up a lawsuit." - Hagerstown

"As a resident of Cumberland, Md., that works in Hagerstown, I read The Herald-Mail five days a week, and I love Mail Call, and this is to the person who called in about you should discontinue Mail Call. I think it's a great thing to have, and I wish our Cumberland paper would start the same thing. And please keep Mail Call." - Cumberland, Md.
