Mail Call

August 17, 2010

"Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary, but remember, the senior citizens did not take the melody out of music, the pride out of appearance, the courtesy out of driving, the romance out of love, the commitment out of marriage, the responsibility out of parenthood, the togetherness out of family, the learning out of education, the Golden Rule from rulers, the Nativity scene out of cities."

- Hagerstown

"Twenty-six billion dollars from Washington to keep teachers' jobs in states that can't pay them. Where does it end? Think about it, it's up to the kids to do the learning. A few laid-off teachers won't change that. It's time to say enough and cut the money off to the schools."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I wish that you guys who put your cigarette butts in the urinals in public restrooms would stop. It makes them soggy and hard to light."

"You people critical of Obama, seriously think about this. Would you rather have one of the Bushes back? Both of them started wars that cost billions of dollars and many lives, for what? Guess they fought for oil in Iraq and heroin in Afghanistan. You do know Afghanistan is where the world's poppy supply is grown."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"George Bush is the best thing that ever happened to President Obama. I don't know how Obama would get through his day if he didn't have George Bush to blame for everything. If Obama's shoestring breaks, it's George Bush's fault. If it rains on his picnic, it's George Bush's fault. And another thing, though, at least having Obama in there makes Jimmy Carter look (good)."

- Williamsport

"This message is for President Obama. Winners take responsibility, losers blame others."

- Hagerstown

"I'm just wondering what's wrong with today's people. People live together and take each other for granted. Usually one party ends up paying all the bills while the other's complaining. And secondly, the worst part of it all is one person's usually a giver and the other's a taker, where one still ends up paying all the bills and doing the housework while the other's a lazy bum."

- Hagerstown

"I'm absolutely mesmerized by the comment that the person from Washington County made about Kagan. She is the former dean of the Harvard Law School. She probably knows more about the law than any sitting judge on the Supreme Court. Give me a break. That's why she was voted in."

- Washington County

"I just want to state an opinion about something. I work in a local restaurant, and I'm a waitress, and you know, nine times out 10, you know, we're really tired at the end of the night, we want to go home. People, when you see that we are cleaning up around you, please have the courtesy not to just sit there and talk, when there's probably nine times out of 10 a bar in that restaurant that you could go up and sit and talk at, because we want to go home."

- Hagerstown

"The Lindsay Lane caller is a typical barking dog owner. Such owners feel no obligation to control their nuisance animals and if anyone complains then they accuse that person of being the problem rather than accepting the blame themselves. Go online and Google the word 'sociopath.'"

- Washington County

"I'm calling in regard to the article in the paper about Mr. Hurd, who supposedly shot two dogs on his property. Mr. Hurd was found guilty of some offense. I think that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It is his land. He should be able to control his land and other people's animals shouldn't be on his land. I think he should be patted on the back."

- Boonsboro

"OK, Ehrlich for governor - good Lord. After the mess he left us in the last time, he should be ashamed to even put his name on the ballot."

- Hagerstown

"This concerns the Smithsburg person who wrote in about a stink bug, and they're crawling on their table at a fast-food restaurant. It's not like there was a cockroach or something in your food. Stink bugs are everywhere; in churches, in businesses, in every restaurant, in every fast-food restaurant, every store. They're everywhere."

- Hagerstown

"I don't have anything to hide, and I wouldn't care about showing my ID to anyone. The ones who are complaining about this are the ones that have to be having something to hide."

- Hagerstown

"This response is an answer to the guy that was in the fast-food restaurant and saw the stink bug crawling across the table. He wanted to know how I would have handled it. I would have killed it. Maybe it came in on his shirt."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"In response to the caller on Lindsay Lane with barking dogs: This is a town house community, which means neighbors are very close. The solution is not for tenants not to live where people can have dogs, but maybe you should be a more responsible pet owner. I have to believe there are other circumstances in regards to having your dog removed. Maybe poor living conditions, or having more pets (than) allowed by the covenants of your HOA."
