School's here

So here we are, at the middle of August, but the end of summer, so it would seem.

Do you realize that the children head back to school Wednesday? Vacations are over tans are great and school shopping is complete, so there is no excuse for not having the most of enthusiastic attitudes for a fulfilling and exciting school year.

Duck race

The Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. will hold its annual duck race Saturday, Aug. 28, in conjunction with its chicken barbecue.

Ducks are dumped in the Antietam Creek at 1 p.m. and the race is on. Before you get ready to call the authorities, the ducks are of the plastic carnival variety.

You can purchase a duck for $5 or seven for $25 and hope that your duck crosses the finish line in the top numbers. Prizes vary, but are all worth the effort. If you wish to participate and help out the local fire company, call 301-790-0090.

Legion crab feed

Jump across the road and check out what the Funkstown American Legion Dixon-Troxel Post 211 has going on the very same day. If you have somehow gone through the entire summer without having any hardshell crabs, then you are in luck.

The American Legion will hold a crab feed Saturday, Aug. 28, starting at noon. Food is available from 1 to 5 p.m. and gaming and beverages from noon to 5. Cost is $35 per person.

Trash pick-up

A quick reminder that trash pick-up for Funkstown is now Thursday mornings.

You should put out your household waste late Wednesday evening. Yard waste pick-up will be early Tuesday morning.

The town appreciates your cooperation as it implements this once-a-week pick-up to help to balance the budget.
