Among the golfers playing in the Tri-State Junior Golf Association championship, it came as no surprise that Chris Bushey won the 16-18 age division on Monday at Beaver Creek Country Club.

After an eighth-place finish over the weekend in the WACO Championship, Bushey came out and shot a 1-over-par 73 to win his final junior event.

Kyle Huntzberry won the 14-15 division on the first playoff hole and, in his customary spot, Max Bell won the 12-13 division.

Starting his round on No. 10, Bushey carded a 39 in his first nine, then came back with a 34 on the front, which included four birdies.

"I scored better than I played," said Bushey. "It's good to go out with a good finish, but I'm ready for college."

Bushey, who will attend Potomac State, remembers standing on the 10th tee at Beaver Creek in his pre-high school days and receiving some prodding from a local golf standout.

"(Boonsboro coach Greg Henry) saw me and told me I could play, to go try out for the team," said Bushey, who graduated from Smithsburg.

He shot a 101 in his first district competition, but those days were soon to be long gone.

"It's from getting stronger, maturing, practice and help from a lot of people," said Bushey.

Huntzberry, who should be one of the top players at Smithsburg this fall, won his first age division title with a par on the 10th hole to beat Adam Poulson and Austin Green in the three-way playoff. Each player carded an 80 in regulation.

"I'm excited to win today and I'm looking forward to the season," said Huntzberry.

Bell, of Chambersburg, Pa., dominated the 12-13 division throughout the year, his third in junior golf.

He shot a 78, good for a two-stroke margin of victory over Nick Franki and Nik Steiner.

Bell, 14, who first started swinging a golf club at age 2, will vie for a position on the Chambersburg High School golf team this fall as he enters ninth grade at Faust Junior High.
