About six years ago, Dorothy Binkley of Hagerstown and members of Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship in Cearfoss got together to make quilts, not knowing that it would turn into an annual event.

Church members Bernie Burkett, Judy Carbaugh, Pat Greenlee, Jo Ann Hendershot and Becky Slate were interested in quilting, and came to Binkley to get a group together, Binkley said.

"I guess they knew I quilted and wanted to know if we could get something started," Binkley said.

After they completed their first quilt, Binkley said the women gave it to the church to be auctioned at the annual church auction. They have been doing it ever since.

"We've done six so far, and we only make one a year to auction off at the church," Binkley said.

Binkley said the top patterns for the quilt are always donated, but the women have to buy the backing and filler.

This year, Binkley said, the pattern donated was called Texas Star. The women quilted the Texas Star from Jan. 18 through July 26.

"It was given to me to quilt, and so we have been working on it and took it out" on July 26, Binkley said. "Usually we know who gives the pattern, but the family who gave this wanted to remain anonymous."

According to Binkley, the women worked on the quilt Mondays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the church, but not every person could come every time.

"We try to wait until after Christmas because of things going on with Sunday school and the church," Binkley said.

Binkley said quilting with the group has been a great experience.

"It's been very pleasant. We enjoy talking while we quilt and all that," she said.

According to Binkley, half of the women had never quilted before, and the process was one of learning and teaching.

Binkley, however, said she has been quilting "most of my life, since I was in the teens."

Binkley's stepmother introduced her to quilting.

"When she went to church to quilt and I wasn't in school, I went with her, and soon I learned to quilt. When I was home, I would piece quilt and I learned," Binkley said.

Binkley said she has been quilting ever since.

The Texas Star quilt will be auctioned at the eighth annual church auction on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship.

Doors open at 9 a.m. The silent auction will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The live auction begins at 11 a.m. Food will be available all day and there will be a concert from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship Community Ministry Center.
