WILLIAMSPORT - Gladys Alma Ashby Smith, 88, of Williamsport, Md., and formerly of Old Forge Road, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born Sunday, Aug. 26, 1921, in Berkeley Station, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Franklin Ashby and the late Elston Ida Whitacre Ashby.

Her husband, David Lewis Smith, preceded her in death in 1997.

She was employed with Fairchild Aircraft and later retired from Allegheny Pepsi Cola.

She was a member of Beaver Creek Homemakers Club and enjoyed many years of square dancing/travel with her husband. She was also an avid duckpin bowler at Longmeadow Bowl.

She is survived by two daughters, Carole S. Daly of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Judith C. Phleeger of Hagerstown, Md.; son, Vincent L. Smith of Fairplay, Md.; brother, R. Carson Ashby of Williamsport, Md.; four grandchildren, Bentley Trumpower of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Wesley Phleeger of Las Vegas, Nev., Erica Smith of Baltimore, Md., and Stuart Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two great-grandchildren, Staff Sgt. Justin Trumpower of the U.S. Air Force and Tiffany Coe of Martinsburg, W.Va.


She was preceded in death by sisters, Wilda Davis, Madelon Hershberger, Emily Houser, Doris Byers and Juanita Gigeous; and brother, J. Luther Ashby.

Services will be Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown MD 21742, with the Rev. Dr. Sue Snyder officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Williamsport Retirement Village Building Fund, 154 N. Artizan St., Williamsport, MD 21795.
