SHARPSBURG, Md. - Virginia Marie (Sprecher) Shumaker, 68, of Sharpsburg, Md., passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, while surrounded by her family and friends.

Born Oct. 3, 1941, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Louise (Judd) Sprecher.

Her husband, Ellis L. Shumaker, preceded her in death in 1995.

Virginia was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who dedicated her life to raising her family.

She is survived by her five sons, Lester L. Shumaker of Frederick, Md., Douglas L. Shumaker of Sharpsburg, Michael D. Shumaker Sr. and his fiance Terri Bearer of Hagerstown, Jeffery E. Shumaker and his wife Doris of Keedysville, Md., and Herbert E. Shumaker of Sharpsburg; two sisters, Catherine Kline of Smithsburg, Md., and Betty Lou Rowland of Illinois; one brother, Clarence Sprecher of Illinois; her four grandchildren, Michael, Amanda, Travis and Brittany; and her great-grandson, Brentyn. She is also survived by her best friend, Helen Cross; and her special caretaker, Angie Smith.


Virginia was preceded in death by her infant twin sons, Terry and Jerry Shumaker; and her brother, Herbert Sprecher.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. R. Thomas Fralin Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg.

Friends may begin visiting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
